Why do we spurn simplicity in favor of complexity?

A question so commonly asked that it has become a cliché is this: “It can’t possibly be that simple, can it?” We don’t just value complexity, we expect it. So when we encounter a clear and simple solution to our problem, we don’t trust it. We are upside down about it all!

For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Paul is warning us here, but are we heeding that warning? When things get complex and cloudy and loud, we can know that some plan of the enemy is at work. Can you see that in your life? Is there a person or situation where nothing is ever simple? “The simplicity that is in Christ” is what we desperately need—and must come to value.
