Serve in Spirit
We are all called to serve, but is God really served? Where lies the secret of true service?
The secret of service is to serve in spirit!
"God is my witness Whom I serve in my spirit" (Romans 1:9). This is the testimony of the apostle Paul. Should this not be true for all who are called to serve? God is Spirit, and He can only be served in spirit, not in flesh. Although this sounds simple, it is a fundamental principle of service that is being violated all the time. How we need to be reminded again and again lest we forget!
"From the time we are saved the Lord is constantly working one thing in us: the breaking down of the outward man. For what the world needs is the treasure, not the earthen vessel. Unless the earthen vessel is broken the treasure is not released (2 Corinthians 4:7). Yet because the way of blessing is stained with blood, how few are traveling on this road! The fearful and the cautious will never experience the breaking of the outward man. Only the committed are ready to be broken. Each and every one of us must come to recognize the purpose of the Lord's dealings in our lives. All the things which one experiences during his lifetime are full of meaning. For the sake of breaking our outward man, whatever experiences the Lord may give us are always the best, the best of heaven."
Watchman Nee, Serve in Spirit
In Serve in Spirit, Watchman Nee shares with us what he learned through his years of serving God. These messages were originally delivered in the last years of Nee's freedom prior to his imprisonment, and many of them were directed to young people, who were always in his heart. Contained in this book are valuable instructions to young believers who have a heart to serve and new believers of any age.
May all who truly desire to serve God to His satisfaction learn this open but neglected secret.
