When it comes to the heart, emotions can hold sway and redefine reality for us. It is healthy – and necessary – to feel what you feel and acknowledge it, but we should never be ruled by our feelings. Do you take your feelings and emotions to God, especially when they threaten to overwhelm? Do you take your open heart to Him so that He can make sense of it for you? Or do you work very hard to fix your heart – and any inappropriate or just plain wrong feelings that bubble up – on your own? We are called to guard our hearts and how we handle our emotions is a big part of what it means to do so.

There aren’t any shortcuts when it comes to having an open and honest heart. The heart is often messy and turbulent and vulnerable at all the wrong times. But when you begin to experience the fruit of this vigilance, the work pales in comparison.

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

We return again this month to the Lord’s pivotal command and move deeper still into how we go about guarding our hearts.
