The Church in Crisis

“There is a crisis in the Church and that crisis is the need for discernment.”

In what could easily be a bookend to the Shulamite Ministries conference “The Triumph of the Lamb,” July’s Message of the Month tackles the growing crisis in the Church today: lack of discernment.

2 Timothy 4:3 NASB
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires…

“This age is full of ‘goodness’ and not discernment, grace and not confrontation or accountability.” 

What happens when the Church lacks discernment? Wolves come in and ravage the sheep. False gospels proliferate and spread without check. Spirit-led confrontation all but disappears and accountability goes out the window. The ways of the world move in and false prophets are hailed as brilliant truth-tellers. Without discernment, the Church will be defeated and destroyed. 

The substance of this message should evoke fear and trembling, yet Martha delivers this warning with great hope and love. We are sheep with a Good Shepherd, and that is evident in every word spoken here. “The Church in Crisis” is a wake-up call, but there is no spirit of fear or condemnation in it at all. Every crisis already has a Solution, and this one is no different. So hear the Holy Spirit’s warning, heed His wisdom and hold fast to the victorious Lord, our only safety.

“The love of Christ leads to discernment. And those who know the Lord do not put forth their own hand and opinion to try to solve things.”
